Since 1932

Nine decades at the same address

House of Steens has dressed Stockholm since 1932. In those years we have made more tailcoats, mess jackets and wedding suits than we can count – and learned that it is never really about the garment, but about the evening it is worn for.

The shop is two floors up at Odengatan 106. Parquet floors, gilded mirrors and garments hung on brass. You will be met by someone who knows the difference between a peak and a shawl lapel, and who will ask what you are going to before asking what you want.

The details

What you cannot see is what holds it together

A jacket is built from the inside. The canvas in the chest moulds itself to the body and keeps the garment hanging correctly even after ten years – unlike fused cheap work, which starts to bubble the first time it rains.

The same goes for the rest. A bow tie should be tied, not clipped on. The waistcoat should end exactly where it ought to. The cuffs should show a centimetre. We go through all of it with you in the fitting room, and you are not expected to know any of it beforehand.

How it works

Four steps, no rush

Book a visit

Choose the occasion and a time that suits you. The fitting costs nothing and takes about half an hour.

Fitting & measurements

We take your measurements, go through the dress code and bring out the options. You try them on unhurried.

Alterations

Our tailors adjust sleeve length, waist and trousers. For made to measure there is an intermediate fitting.

Collected in the shop

You collect everything finished a few days beforehand. We show you how to tie the bow tie before you go.

Uniforms & mess dress

To regulation, to your measurements

Mess dress is worn at formal gatherings across several arms of service and comes in two forms: full mess dress, which corresponds to white tie, and short mess dress, which corresponds to black tie.

We make uniforms to measure for the Swedish Army, Navy, Air Force and Merchant Navy – and we also produce the Swedish police ceremonial dress. It is work where every detail has to be right, which is precisely why we still do it by hand.

Collecting my tuxedo here felt more like walking a red carpet. Everything went as smoothly as it possibly could, and Diana was like a director in full control – nothing was left to chance. The result? A perfect fit, zero stress and service of the very highest order.

Professional in every respect. Hired a dinner jacket and a suit and bought the accessories that went with them. It was all very straightforward and the result was superb.
